UNIONS UNITE ON HAITI APPEAL.

Photo : L-R : Terry Delaney (CWU Ireland Deputy General Secretary), Jimmy O'Connor (CWU   Ireland Ass/Sec.) Kevin McCafferty (CWU Northern Ireland Engineering Branch Treasurer) Charlie Kelly (CWU Ireland President).

The Communication Workers Union of Ireland presented 10,000 euros to CWU UK to accompany the £1,000 already donated by the CWU Northern Ireland Engineering Branch, towards the Haiti Appeal.

The money was forwarded to the National Nurses United union in the USA, whose members, following the disaster, have volunteered to give their time freely and provide ongoing relief to the survivors of the earthquake.

Lawrence C.Huston, CWU Regional Secretary, Northern Ireland, said "This once again is a clear demonstration of how cross border co-operation between trade unions across Ireland and the UK can work for the greater good"

Jimmy O'Connor, CWU Ireland Ass/Sec. said, "Almost 7,500 registered nurses signed up within a few days of the disaster, and this money will help support those nurses in providing 'Hands on Care' to the victims of the Haiti disaster"

Charlie Kelly, CWU Ireland President, who hails from Co.Donegal, said "It makes me proud to be part of a world wide trade union movement that responded so quickly to this disaster by providing volunteers and financial assistance to help alleviate the suffering"

The National Nurses United promised that this was an ongoing relief mission and will continue long after the TV cameras and media have left!
